Generational Development Begins
Saturday’s economic development meeting of the Westerville City Council focused on capital improvement projects, including “East of Africa,” the recently acquired 88 acres of land along Africa Road, and upgrades to City Hall. During the meeting, each department head outlined their future needs.
The two major projects, East of Africa and City Hall, were described as “Generational Development” projects. This term refers to initiatives that create long-lasting spaces benefiting the current population and future generations.
The Westar project, located west of Africa Road, began 30 years ago and has since seen the construction of several company headquarters, a hotel, and a community center with sports fields.
The council noted that these projects demand extensive planning and represent a significant investment, with 20-25% of the city’s 2.0% income tax allocated to them. Westerville adopts a long-term approach to these developments, typically involving a five-year cycle for planning, design, and execution.
City Manager Monca Dupee and Assistant City Manager Jason Bechtold explained the “East of Africa” development and the expansion of City Hall.
