East of Africa Dirt Piles Update and Sunbury Road Closure Photo Gallery
There are two large piles of dirt at the East of Africa project. One is going away. A portion of the other will stay.
The smaller one on the west side of Africa Road is getting smaller every day. Construction debris and soil from building the nearby DHL headquarters have been stored on city property just north of the Sharkey family home. That pile has gradually been removed to another site as fill dirt, making way for development and eliminating the elevated spot that gave deer a view of the lower field on the Yarnell Farm.
The larger pile of topsoil is located in the middle of ten acres across Africa Road from the smaller pile. The pile is being reserved for the East of Africa project, with part of it being sold to landscapers and developers.
The soil is being processed on-site before delivery to customers. The photos above and at the top of this edition show the dirt being moved by a bulldozer into position for handling.
Sunbury Road Temporarily Closed For Cable Repair
A semi-truck delivering materials on Chatham Ridge Road at Sunbury Road got tangled in a low-hanging fiber optic and copper wiring cable on Chatham Ridge, pulling it from the utility pole and dropping it across all four lanes of Sunbury Road.
City Electric crews were dispatched to inspect for damage to the poles or the electrical system. The damage was limited to cabling owned by AT&T, which arrived and authorized the city to cut the cable to reopen Sunbury Road, which had been closed in both directions for nearly an hour.
The city crew used a bucket truck to remove the downed cable from the truck and lift it over the street sign damaged by the cable being dragged across it, then helped haul the cable off the roadway.
