First On The First Start
First, Stay Warm For The First On The First
A little more than 1,100 runners kicked off the new year by facing chilly temperatures at the First on the First 5K in Westerville. The race started and finished at Otterbein University, with clear skies and calm weather. Runners hit the slick pavement and breathed out clouds of cold air before most people had even had their morning coffee.
Hunter Blair, wearing bib 992, quickly took the lead and held onto it for the entire race. He finished first with a time of 17:17.29.
Most runners dressed in layers to stay warm, but Blair chose to race in short sleeves, ignoring the cold. Maybe it was confidence, stubbornness, or a smart way to stay cool, but his choice was noticeable. As the race went on, it seemed to pay off. While others adjusted their gloves and sleeves, Blair looked comfortable, running to the finish as if it were already spring.
Behind Blair, the race showed all the usual scenes of a cold-weather 5K. Runners and walkers wore hats and gaiters, stepped carefully on icy spots, and pushed themselves to the finish. Even those who finished last felt proud, showing that on a cold New Year’s morning, just finishing was a win.
