Police video shows reaction to shooting on July 4th - 911 calls released
This series of videos and 911 calls was released Tuesday afternoon following a records request from The Westerville News and other media outlets. The videos and 911 calls are the unedited files as received from the city. Video files from the police are often redacted to maintain privacy.
An e-mail from city spokesperson Hillary Bates said the released files “focus on the most frequently requested parts of the footage.”
The email accompanying the released files said, “The Westerville Division of Police has released the redacted police report and incident footage regarding the July 4th shooting. Pursuant to their request, the victim’s name is being withheld to protect their privacy.”

The Westerville News is a reader-supported publication by Gary Gardiner, a lifelong journalist who believes hyper-local reporting is the future of news. This publication focuses exclusively on Westerville—its local news, influence on Central Ohio, and how surrounding areas shape the community.
Reader funding, including subscribers, protects editorial independence, so coverage is guided by journalists rather than owners or corporate profit goals. It also reduces pressure to chase clicks, letting the newsroom focus on stories worth readers’ time. And it helps keep the site accessible to everyone, including people who can’t pay or live in places where a free press is under threat.
