Water Treatment Pond Repairs Begun
The City of Westerville is repairing its water treatment plant to fix leaks in one of its lime holding ponds. These ponds play a crucial role in the water softening process, as lime is used to eliminate calcium and magnesium from the water. Over time, the pond's lining has worn down, resulting in leaks that could potentially impact the surrounding environment, including Alum Creek.
The bottom of one of the ponds has deteriorated over time, causing lime sludge to leak into the soil. To prevent further environmental damage and protect the nearby creek, the city is draining the pond and planning to install a new liner that will provide a more effective barrier.
Before installing the liner, crews must remove a large amount of accumulated lime sludge from the pond. Tanker trucks will pump and transport this material to two nearby agricultural sites: the Braun Farm and Otterbein Farm, which are located about half a mile from the treatment plant. Following EPA-approved guidelines, the lime is spread over the fields as part of a land application program. This practice recycles the lime in a way that benefits soil conditions without causing harm to the environment.
Alongside the new liner, the project will include the installation of concrete ramps to enhance access for future cleaning and maintenance, as well as updates to the stormwater management around the lagoon.
Tunnel to Towers 5K On Sunday
This Sunday, May 18, community members will gather at the Westerville Sports Complex for the annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk. The event, which begins at 9:00 AM, honors the legacy of first responders and raises funds for first responders and military families supported by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
This year’s co-chair, Linda Morelli, lost her spouse in the line of duty and has turned her personal loss into a mission to remember all who serve.
Participants can register online through race day, with fees supporting both the local event and the broader Foundation’s programs. The 5K route winds through Westerville’s streets, with water stations and a post-run gathering planned to bring neighbors together in support of heroes among us.
